The Utah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. at South Fork Park, was an intentional act. Witnesses, including classmates and teachers, reported that Miller pulled out a gun and shot himself in front of the group.

No other students were physically harmed, but the impact of what they saw has deeply shaken the school and community. Investigators are still working to determine how the teenager obtained the firearm.

In a statement, the Alpine School District expressed grief and outlined steps to support students, families, and staff. Counseling services will be offered for as long as needed, with the district urging parents to stay close to their children during this difficult time. Parent-teacher conferences scheduled for Thursday were canceled, though classes will continue.

“The administrative team at Canyon View has acted with the utmost compassion and professionalism. We are grateful for their love and leadership,” the district said.

Friends and family described Maxwell as a bright, kind-hearted young man whose pain remained hidden from many around him. His sudden death has left classmates and loved ones struggling with grief, questions, and heartbreak.

Funeral services for Maxwell Jordan Miller will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1405 North Main Street, Orem, following a viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Another viewing will take place the evening before, on Tuesday, September 30, from 6–8 p.m. Burial will follow at the Orem City Cemetery.
